ArteFill
ArteFill is the first injectable filler available in the United States that fulfills the promise of lasting results. ArteFill injections have been used for more than a decade throughout Europe and Canada under the name Artecoll for treatment of nasolabial folds (the deep lines that run from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth). ArteFill has recently received approval from the FDA for treatment of nasolabial folds, and is now available at Naficy Plastic Surgery & Rejuvenation Center.
HOW IS ARTEFILL DIFFERENT FROM TEMPORARY DERMAL FILLERS?
All temporary fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, Collagen, and Radiesse are eventually absorbed by the body and repeat injections are required to maintain results. ArteFill is different, as a component of ArteFill (known as ArteFill microspheres), are not absorbed by the body. These microspheres provide the permanent support needed for long-lasting wrinkle correction.
WHAT IS ARTEFILL?
ArteFill is a combination of a well-known temporary filler (Collagen), and a permanent acrylic based filler known as polymethyl methacrylate, or PMMA. ArteFill contains 80% purified bovine collagen and 20% ArteFill Precision-Filtered Microspheres (tiny spheres made of PMMA, the same material used for dozens of medical implants over the last 50 years). As the collagen portion of ArteFill goes away with time, the ArteFill PMMA microspheres stimulate collagen production by the skin and finally become encapsulated (fully covered) by the patient's own collagen fibers which provides the lasting results.
ARTEFILL RESULTS
ArteFill results are similar to results obtainable using other fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Radiesse. The major difference is that results from ArteFill are long lasting. Typically only 2-3 treatment sessions, about 3-4 months apart, are needed to get a lasting correction.

ARTEFILL SKIN TEST
A skin test is required to make sure that you are not allergic to the bovine collagen contained in ArteFill. The skin test involves injection of a small amount of the collagen under the skin of the forearm and a waiting period of about 4-6 weeks to make sure there is no reaction.
HOW DOES AN ARTEFILL TREATMENT COMPARE TO TEMPORARY FILLERS?
ArteFill treatment is similar to treatment using other injectable fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Radiesse. It involves injection of the ArteFill under the skin with a fine needle and takes only a few minutes. You can resume your normal activities immediately. It can take a few months for ArteFill results to show and most people get lasting results after 2-3 treatment sessions, spaced 3-4 months apart.
CAN ANYONE HAVE ARTEFILL TREATMENTS?
Most individuals are good candidates for ArteFill treatment. ArteFill is contraindicated (not recommended) in those who:
- Have a positive reaction to the ArteFill skin test.
- Have a history of severe allergies and hypersensitivity (anaphylaxis).
- Are allergic to the anesthetic (lidocaine) in ArteFill.
- Have a history of allergies to any bovine collagen products.
- Are prone to thick scarring and/or keloid scarring.
- Are undergoing or planning to undergo allergy shots for meat products.
ARTEFILL COST
The cost of your ArteFill treatment depends on the amount of ArteFill used and can range from $600 to $1800 per treatment. You will discuss your goals with you provider and select the appropriate amount of ArteFill to use. Although the initial cost of ArteFill is higher than that of other injectable fillers, such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Radiesse, the long-lasting nature of ArteFill offers savings in the long run.
